I found two good thread at the Axim site that allow users to flash the Axim X51v ROM from a SD card. This method is very useful when for some reason your ROM upgrade failed using the Dell’s upgrade tool. It’s also a method that can be used for those who want to install a different ROM language in their devices.

I received recently an email from one of my customers with a hack that I would like to share.

Quote:

This new registry change isnt really "useful" but is nice to make to "customise" your Pocket PC further!

Also I think this registry change can only be done on the hx4700 Pocket PCs because I cannot find this registry entry on my other Pocket PCs.

The registry entry that I changed is found in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Drivers
HTC_Misc
ProgressBar

here you can chage the color, height, and width of the progess bar you see when you do a soft reset on the Pocket PC.

Normally the default characteristics of this progress bar is blue and very thin.

I changed mine to be green and thicker with a red background by editing the following entries:

BarBackgroundColor 55555 Decimal Entry

BarColor 75555 Decimal Entry

BarHeight 55 Decimal Entry

Thanks Jennifer Hlynn

Fixing the system cache to certain value makes WM5 to perform better according to the results of my tests (Word Document).
http://www.tweaks2k2.com/binfiles/wm5cache.zip

According to these tests the optimum value is 4096. By default the value of the following registry keys is 0, which means a flexible unlimited cache size. By changing them to the above mentioned value you can increase the system performance up to 20% in some activities.

Quote:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize=0x1000(4096)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache=0x1(1)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=0x1000(4096)

This hack is included in Tweaks2k2. More info about it can be found here
This is how is done in Tweaks2k2

Open your registry and go to this key:

Quote:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Clock/

And change the binary value AppState to 10. A soft reset is not needed

The Security Prompt is a feature included in WM5 (X51v) that ask you for permission the first time that you run or install an application that have not been digitally signed by MS or one of their partners. This feature is present in Windows Mobile 2003 for SmartPhones too.

To disable this feature open the registry and change this value:

Quote:

HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies,

Value 0000101a from 0 to 1

Soft Reset is not needed.

This problem was described for the first time by Pocket TV Team. Basically what happens is that users can not go back and use a file opened if the device is turned off and then on.

This bug was found in Toshibas e800 and e400 series where this registry key is set to a very low value:

Quote:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\StorageManager\\

PNPUnloadDelay=800

The solution is to change PNPUnloadDelay to 4096. In some devices 1500 is enough.

Soft Reset is required after the application of this registry hack.

RAR files are becoming one of the most comun compressed files format online so having a tool to uncompress these files in our Pocket PCs is a must have.

WinRAR has a version designed for Pocket PCs that can be downloaded for free here.
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

This tool can be used to uncompress RAR files and ZIP files.

When you try to use the ActiveSync Remote Display (ASRD), a little tool that is part of Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys, in a VGA Pocket PC you will notice that the PPC screen is shown in the PC in a 240x230 resolution (QVGA) losing in this way quality.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/6/0/7606be4b-eea7-4515-83a0-81d7d9ac9ce1/WindowsMobilePowerToys.msi

To avoid this problem all you need is to apply the HI_RES_AWARE hack manually or using Tweaks2k2 .NET to this file located in "windows" in your PPC: "cerdisp2.exe".

Keep in mind that this executable is only copied to your PPC the first time that the Pocket Controller is used so this trick can only be applied once you have used Pocket Controller one time.

This trick will free about 1 MB of RAM and it's very well explained by Menneisyys in this Bright Hand thread:
http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=773919#post773919

Tweaks2k2 owners can move all files mentioned by Menneisyys in his article to a folder called System that is created by Tweaks2k2 when you use the option to move dlls out of RAM. The folder System is part of the the "System Path".
How to increase the time for the keyboard light of the HTC Blue Angel

HTC Blue Angel is the code name given by HTC to a Smart Phone that works with Windows Mobile 2003 SE and that currently is sold by several companies under various names: Siemens SX66, QTek 9090, MDA III, AudioVox 6600, etc.
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=569

This trick will increase the time for the keyboard light which is usually 10 seconds to 60 seconds. The trick has been included in Tweaks2K2 .NET 3.4 in case you have some difficults applying it manually.

Using PHM Registry Editor look for the following registry key:

HKEY_Current_User\Control Panel\Backlight\

and change the value QKeyLedTimeout from 10 to 60 (dec). Close everything and do a Soft Reset to complete the trick.

I have to thank Cesar Fong for his work in this trick. You can turn on/off all LEDs in any hx4700 by using this file. Just unzip it and copy the exes to your Pocket PC.
